A local farming family near Baraboo, Wisconsin has accidentally uncovered what appears to be a series of ancient stone circles buried beneath their fields — and experts say it might be one of the most significant prehistoric discoveries in the U.S. Midwest.

The Discovery
While digging a drainage trench, the Landry family hit a row of oddly placed stones—massive slabs aligned in perfect circular patterns, buried just beneath the surface. A university team from Madison was called in, and early surveys revealed over 30 large standing stones, many aligned with solar and lunar events.

Aligned With the Heavens
According to archaeologist Dr. Marcus Patel, the layout of the stones appears to mirror solar solstices and lunar cycles, similar to the famous Stonehenge in England.

“This isn’t random. The precision is stunning,” said Dr. Patel. “We’re talking about a culture with sophisticated astronomical knowledge.”

How Old Could It Be?
Preliminary testing of the soil and lichen on the stones suggests they could date back over 4,000 years — long before the rise of any known civilizations in this part of North America.

Who Built It — and Why?
No known Indigenous culture in the region is associated with megalithic stone circles of this scale. However, some Native American oral histories do speak of “sky people” and ancient “stone calendars” used by their ancestors.

Importantly, tribal representatives are now involved in ongoing discussions about preservation, interpretation, and cultural significance.

A Message from the Past?
Some researchers believe the structure could have been used as a calendar, ceremonial site, or burial ground, but others urge caution until more excavations are done.
