Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has never been one to panic — but he’s also not one to ignore a problem. After some notable struggles protecting the blindside during early 2024 preseason action, Reid has unveiled a creative solution involving rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia.

Suamataia, a second-round pick out of BYU, was initially expected to develop behind the scenes. But with shaky performances at the left tackle spot — including blown protections that left Patrick Mahomes vulnerable — Reid is ready to adjust. During a press conference this week, Reid revealed that the team may rotate Suamataia in specific pass-blocking situations and even experiment with shifting him to the right side temporarily to ease the pressure.

“We still believe in Kingsley,” Reid said. “He’s got the tools, he just needs the reps — and the right matchups to build confidence.”

The move suggests the Chiefs aren’t abandoning their long-term plans for the rookie but are willing to be flexible to keep Mahomes upright and the offense efficient. With Reid’s history of grooming linemen into Pro Bowlers, Suamataia may yet live up to the hype — just on a slightly different path.
