The Kansas City Chiefs just made a powerful statement about the future of their defense.
On Saturday, the team signed star defensive end George Karlaftis to a four-year, $93 million contract extension, including $62 million guaranteed, securing one of their brightest young defensive stars through the 2029 season.
The 24-year-old Karlaftis, a second-round pick in 2022 out of Purdue, has emerged as a force off the edge. In his first three seasons, he racked up 24.5 sacks, 115 total tackles, and 48 QB hits, showing constant growth and high motor every time he steps on the field.
“George embodies everything we want in a Chief — relentless effort, toughness, and a team-first mentality,” said head coach Andy Reid. “He’s only getting better.”
The extension is the latest in a string of long-term investments the Chiefs have made in their core players. Just days earlier, they signed guard Trey Smith to a historic contract, proving once again that Brett Veach and the front office are committed to building around their homegrown talent.
Karlaftis’ breakout season in 2024 — where he posted 11 sacks and played a career-high 83% of defensive snaps — positioned him as a foundational piece of Kansas City’s pass rush. Paired with Chris Jones and Mike Danna, the Chiefs’ defensive line remains one of the most feared in the league.
With training camp officially underway, locking up Karlaftis provides stability and focus for a team chasing an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl title.
