As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in crimson and orange hues, Inspector Maxim walked along a narrow path beside the city landfill. His loyal service dog, Jack, a powerful German Shepherd, trotted alongside him, his coat shimmering in the fading light. After a long day of training, they were heading home to finish their shift. The area was quiet, with only the occasional rumble of garbage trucks returning from their routes. Overflowing bins lined the road, exuding the familiar stench of decay and refuse.

Maxim held the leash loosely, confident in Jack’s obedience. The dog was well-trained and rarely acted on impulse. But that evening, everything changed in an instant. As another garbage truck passed by, the driver stopped to take a smoke break. Suddenly, Jack froze. His body tensed, eyes narrowed, and ears perked up. In the next moment, he lunged forward, barking with a commanding urgency that sent a chill down Maxim’s spine.

“Jack, heel!” Maxim commanded, but the dog was unyielding. He strained against the leash, growling fiercely at the back of the truck as if sensing an invisible threat. Maxim felt a wave of unease wash over him. Jack’s behavior was unusual, and for the first time in years, he felt a flicker of fear.

The driver, shrugging off the commotion, approached them. “Maybe a rat or raccoon got in there,” he suggested casually. But Maxim sensed something far more serious. He pulled out his badge and asked the driver to open the back of the truck. Reluctantly, the man agreed, pressing a button that released the metal door with a loud clank.

A foul odor wafted out, a mix of rotting garbage, wet cardboard, and plastic. But Jack, undeterred by the stench, leaped into the back of the truck. He began to dig through the pile of refuse, tearing at bags and tossing aside bits of cardboard with his powerful jaws. Maxim covered his nose with his sleeve, climbing in after him, unable to comprehend what was happening.

Then came a piercing whimper, a sound so distinct it made Maxim’s heart race. Jack stopped, his head cocked to one side, gently nudging a box with his nose as if sensing something alive inside. Maxim leaned closer, his breath hitching in his throat as he pulled the box from the heap of trash. It was soaked and dirty, but he could see it was a cardboard box for a baby.

With trembling hands, he opened it slowly, and his heart sank. Inside, curled up and shivering, lay a tiny baby. The infant’s eyes were barely open, lips blue from cold, and breathing was shallow, almost imperceptible. The child was wrapped in an old, damp sweater, clearly having been abandoned for far too long. Dirt and grime covered the baby’s cheeks, and a faint whimper escaped its lips.

Maxim felt his hands shake as he carefully lifted the baby from the box, cradling it against his chest. “Call for an ambulance!” he shouted to the driver, who stood frozen in shock. Jack stayed close, his eyes fixed on the baby, sensing the gravity of the situation. They sprinted toward the patrol car, Maxim’s heart racing as he dialed emergency services while holding the fragile infant.

The sirens wailed as they sped down the empty road, the sound echoing in Maxim’s ears. All he could hear was his own ragged breathing and the faint whimpers of the baby.
