In a statement that has sent shockwaves through both the sports and social justice communities, Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson publicly announced on Tuesday that he will not be participating in any Pride Month celebrations this June. The 25-year-old NFL standout explained his stance in an Instagram Live session, during which he criticized what he called the “woke agenda,” stating that it “doesn’t deserve to be commemorated.”

Jefferson, known for his on-field excellence and vibrant celebrations, is no stranger to the spotlight. But this time, his words have placed him at the center of a cultural firestorm.
“I Don’t Celebrate WOKE”
During the live session, Jefferson was asked by a fan if he planned to wear any Pride-themed gear this month or participate in team Pride events. His response was direct and unapologetic.
“Nah, I’m not into all that. I don’t celebrate Pride Month,” Jefferson said. “To me, that’s part of the WOKE movement, and I don’t think that deserves to be celebrated. I stand for truth, not trends.”
He continued by emphasizing what he called the importance of “traditional values” and said that people should be allowed to hold different views without being “bullied into submission” by corporate or social expectations.
“Just because I don’t wave a rainbow flag doesn’t mean I hate anyone. I just don’t think we need a whole month to glorify a lifestyle,” he added.
Backlash Begins
Reactions to Jefferson’s comments were swift and polarized. LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, fellow athletes, and fans expressed dismay, with some calling for disciplinary action or public clarification from the NFL.
GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) released a statement condemning the remarks:
“It’s disheartening to see a high-profile athlete use his platform to undermine a community that continues to face discrimination and violence. Pride Month is about visibility, love, and equal rights — not about being ‘trendy’ or ‘woke.’”

Former NFL player and outspoken LGBTQ+ ally Carl Nassib tweeted:
“It’s disappointing. Silence is one thing, but speaking out against Pride is another. Representation matters.”
On the other hand, some fans and conservative figures voiced support for Jefferson’s position. Popular political commentator Candace Owens posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Justin Jefferson is brave for standing up to the mob. Not celebrating Pride doesn’t make you hateful. It makes you honest.”
NFL’s Response
As of this publication, the NFL has not issued an official statement regarding Jefferson’s comments. However, a league spokesperson said they are “aware of the situation” and are “currently reviewing the matter.”
