NN. Colorado Couple Missing Since 2011 Found Eight Years Later Inside Abandoned Uranium Mine.

In a chilling discovery that closed an eight-year mystery, the remains of a young Colorado couple who vanished in 2011 were found in 2019 inside a sealed uranium mine in southern Utah.

Sarah Bennett, 26, and Andrew Miller, 28, were last seen in May 2011 after departing for a quiet weekend camping trip in the San Rafael Swell, a remote, rugged region known for its desert canyons and abandoned uranium mines.

The couple—both nature lovers and amateur photographers—were not thrill-seekers, according to family members. “They weren’t adventurers,” Sarah’s sister, Emily Bennett, told The Denver Post in a 2020 interview. “They just wanted peace and a break from the noise of life.”

The couple’s last confirmed location was a gas station in Green River, Utah, where surveillance footage captured them fueling their car and purchasing a map of the surrounding area. After that, they vanished without a trace. Despite a large-scale search effort involving helicopters, search dogs, drones, and volunteers, no clues emerged.

Years passed, and theories abounded—ranging from foul play to more far-fetched ideas involving drug cartels or even alien abduction. But no evidence surfaced to support any theory—until August 2019.

While exploring a long-sealed uranium shaft near Temple Mountain, a group of University of Utah geology students stumbled upon a surreal scene: two fully clothed skeletons sitting side-by-side on rusted folding chairs, more than 300 feet inside the mine. Nearby lay a shattered lantern, a rusted thermos, and an old Nikon film camera.

The mine had partially collapsed beyond that point, creating what experts described as a “natural crypt” that preserved the site and its contents.

Dental records confirmed the remains as Sarah Bennett and Andrew Miller.

Although the official cause of death remains “undetermined,” investigators believe the couple may have become trapped after venturing into the unstable mine. Toxic gas buildup was also cited as a possible factor. No signs of trauma or foul play were found at the scene.

Perhaps the most unsettling discovery was the couple’s camera, which contained several undeveloped photos. One image, timestamped just an hour after they were seen at the gas station, showed part of the mine interior—suggesting they entered the shaft voluntarily and without immediate distress.

“They weren’t running from anything,” said Detective Laura Martinez, who led the reopened investigation. “It looks like they went in together, sat down, and just never came back out.”

The story remains a source of sorrow and speculation. A simple memorial now marks the mine entrance—a stone slab etched with Sarah and Andrew’s names, surrounded by the unforgiving Utah desert.

“Sarah and Andrew went looking for peace,” Emily Bennett said at a 10-year remembrance in 2021. “I hope they found it—wherever they are.”
