h. Celebrating a 49ers Legend: Happy Birthday, Tom Rathman!

Today, the Faithful join together in celebrating the birthday of one of the toughest, most respected players in San Francisco 49ers history — Tom Rathman.

Born on October 7, 1962, Rathman is best known for his role as the powerful, reliable fullback who helped define an era of dominance for the 49ers. Playing alongside legends like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Roger Craig, Rathman was never the flashiest name on the field — but he was often the most important.

A third-round pick in the 1986 NFL Draft out of Nebraska, Rathman quickly made his presence felt in San Francisco. With his bruising blocks, sure hands, and unmatched work ethic, he became the engine that powered one of the league’s most dynamic offenses. Whether opening up running lanes or catching passes out of the backfield, he did all the dirty work — and did it with pride.

Over his nine-year NFL career (eight of them with the 49ers), Rathman totaled more than 2,000 rushing yards, over 2,600 receiving yards, and 34 touchdowns. But stats never told the whole story. His real impact came in the moments that didn’t make the highlight reel — the crucial third-down blocks, the relentless pass protection, the selfless plays that made others shine.

He was an essential part of two Super Bowl-winning teams (Super Bowl XXIII and XXIV), playing a vital role in the 49ers’ championship dynasty. Teammates and coaches frequently praised Rathman’s toughness, intelligence, and quiet leadership.

After his playing days, Rathman continued to give back to the game, becoming a respected running backs coach. He spent years on the 49ers coaching staff, mentoring a new generation of players with the same no-nonsense attitude and attention to detail that defined his career. His coaching stints also included time with the Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts.

On his birthday, fans and former teammates have taken to social media to share memories and appreciation for the fullback who never asked for glory — but always earned respect.

“Tom Rathman was the kind of player every team needs but not every team gets. He did it all, and he did it with heart.” — former teammate Roger Craig.

Rathman’s legacy lives on not only in the 49ers record books but also in the culture he helped build — one of discipline, teamwork, and toughness.

So today, we say:
Happy Birthday, Tom Rathman!
Thank you for the grit, the greatness, and the gold-blooded spirit you brought to the game.
