Multiple people were shot in a shooting near the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade in Kansas City, officials said Wednesday (Feb. 14), leaving at least 22 people injured and one victim dead.

“Several shots were fired west of Union Station near the parking garage, and multiple individuals were injured. We have two armed individuals in custody for further investigation,” the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) in Missouri said in a statement on Feb. 14, shortly after shots rang out, sending terrified fans running for cover.

“We have three individuals in custody and under investigation for today’s incident,” KCPD Chief Stacey Graves said at a 5:25 p.m. news conference, her second update on the violence that erupted at the popular event.

Graves said investigators were aware of rumors that some celebrating fans rushed in and wrestled with one of the gunmen, although she said she could not immediately confirm whether that was the case.

At a news conference, Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson said officials did not anticipate the violence but were prepared to respond.

Of the 22 victims who were shot, eight had life-threatening injuries and six had minor injuries, Grundyson said.

At an earlier news conference, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said, “This is absolutely a tragedy, the kind of tragedy that we never expected to see in Kansas City and the kind that we will remember for a while.”

At the press conference, KCPD Chief of Staff said officers responded to reports of multiple shots fired, took two people into custody, and immediately began providing life-saving assistance.

The investigation is ongoing, she added, but the number of victims has risen to between 10 and 15, including one person who has died.

Graves added that it is too early to say what led to the shooting.
