When people think of the Kansas City Chiefs, the first names that come to mind are undoubtedly Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The franchise has built a reputation for its explosive, highlight-worthy offense—one that often dominates headlines and highlight reels. But if you look beyond the flash, you’ll find a unit that’s just as important, if not more so, when it comes to securing wins: the defense.
While the offensive firepower grabs attention, the Chiefs’ defense has quietly developed into one of the NFL’s most reliable and consistent forces. In fact, last season, Kansas City ranked 4th in the league in fewest points allowed per game, giving up just 19.2 on average. Compare that to their offense’s output of 22.6 points per game, and it becomes clear how critical the defense was in keeping the team competitive—especially in close games.
During the 2024 campaign, the Chiefs were masters of the one-score win. They pulled out victory after victory in tight matchups, and more often than not, it was the defense that held firm when the offense struggled to find rhythm. With Mahomes facing pressure, and the passing game not always firing on all cylinders, it was the defense that made sure the Chiefs stayed in the fight.
Beyond the stats, there’s a culture that’s been built on that side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo continues to lead with intensity and purpose, and the Chiefs have done a solid job of maintaining core personnel while bringing in fresh talent to bolster depth. Heading into the new season, expectations are high—not just for Mahomes and company, but for a defense that has proven it can carry the load.
George Karlaftis, one of the rising stars on the defensive line, recently spoke about that culture. Appearing on SPEAK, he was asked whether the Chiefs’ defense is underrated.
“Yeah, I mean, we’re not doing it for the opinions of other people,” Karlaftis replied. “We know that we have a great quarterback, and if we play well, we always have a chance at winning a game… Whether we get the credit, the offense gets the credit, whoever. It’s about winning games, and that’s the mindset we’ve had.”
That mindset might just be the key to why the Chiefs continue to succeed.
As Kansas City eyes another deep playoff run, perhaps it’s time for fans and analysts alike to shift their focus. The next great Chiefs highlight might not come from a no-look pass or a Kelce touchdown — it might come from a defensive stop on 4th down, a critical sack, or a takeaway that flips momentum.
The offense may be the face of the franchise, but the defense is its backbone. And they’re just fine being underrated — as long as they’re winning.
