Mac Jones is ready for the 49ers to call his number. 

The quarterback will back up Brock Purdy after signing a two-year, $8.4 million contract in San Francisco this offseason, and he said he’s “working hard” to be “ready to play” when needed. 

“Just continue to grow as a player and a person and a teammate,” Jones told NBC Sports Bay Area on Monday about his mindset heading into the season. “I know it’s going to take care of itself, the way I work. And they’ve rubbed off on me, too.

Jones is hoping his time with the 49ers can revive his career, which has been on the decline since an impressive rookie season with the Patriots in 2021. 

“I’m working hard. They’re working hard, and my goal is to be ready to play when I have to go in, and that’s all you can ask for,” Jones added.

After three seasons in New England under Bill Belichick, the Patriots traded Jones to the Jaguars for a 2024 sixth-rounder. 

Jones, a Jacksonville native, backed up Trevor Lawrence last season, going 2-5 in seven lackluster starts.

He completed 171 of his 262 passes for 1,672 yards, but also threw eight interceptions. 

The Jaguars waived Jones’ fifth-year option after the season, and he signed with the 49ers in free agency from there.

The chance to work with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan seemed to be a major factor in Jones’ decision to sign with the team, and the quarterback said he’s been learning a lot from the 45-year-old offensive guru. 

“I’ve obviously learned a lot in my past [from Bill Belichick] about the defensive side of the ball,” Jones said. “But to learn more about offense and defense together has been a big benefit so far.”

Shanahan has a track record of revitalizing quarterbacks’ careers from his time as an offensive coordinator, helping develop Matt Schaub into a Pro-Bowler with the Texans in 2009, and guiding Matt Ryan to an MVP and Super Bowl appearance in 2016.
