NN.”Stone Circle in the Sky: The 3,000-Year-Old Star Map Hidden in Wyoming”

Medicine Wheel (Wyoming): Ancient Star Temple in the Sky

High atop the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming lies a mysterious stone circle known as the Medicine Wheel—a silent witness to centuries of spiritual practice, celestial observation, and cultural heritage.

Believed to be over 800 years old—with some theories suggesting it may date back more than 3,000 years—this sacred monument was constructed by Indigenous peoples of North America. Far more than just a ring of rocks, it is considered by many to be an ancient astronomical observatory and a powerful spiritual site.

A Giant Wheel Aligned With the Stars

The Medicine Wheel measures about 80 feet (25 meters) in diameter, made up of stones carefully laid out in a large circle. At its center is a stone cairn, from which 28 radial spokes extend outward like the spokes of a wheel, connecting to other small stone formations at the perimeter.

But this design is not just symbolic—some of the spokes align precisely with the rising and setting points of the Sun and certain bright stars, such as Aldebaran, Sirius, and Rigel, especially during the summer solstice and other key times of the year.

Scholars believe this wheel may have been used as a giant star calendar, helping ancient people track celestial cycles for ceremonial, agricultural, and spiritual purposes.

A Sacred Connection to the Cosmos

For Indigenous nations like the Crow, Lakota, and Cheyenne, the Medicine Wheel is far more than a scientific instrument. It represents the circle of life, the four sacred directions, and the interconnectedness of all beings with Earth and Sky.

Even today, people journey to the Medicine Wheel for prayer, meditation, and healing—believing that the site still radiates a profound spiritual energy.

Ancient Wisdom—or Something More?

Could ancient people really calculate complex astronomical alignments without modern tools? Or were they guided by a deeper, perhaps forgotten, understanding of the cosmos?

Whether viewed through the lens of archaeology, astronomy, or spirituality, the Medicine Wheel remains one of North America’s most fascinating and mysterious ancient landmarks—a stone gateway between Earth and stars, crafted long before telescopes or satellites ever existed.
