LA CROSSE, Wis. (WFRV) – The 22-year-old Wisconsin woman who hadn’t been seen since July 20 has been found dead.
La Crosse Police say they were notified by the Houston County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday morning that a body had been recovered from the Mississippi River near Brownsville, just a few miles from where Eliotte Heinz had last been seen.
Police have confirmed the body belongs to Heinz. The investigation remained ongoing Wednesday, and police are now awaiting an autopsy for an official cause of death.
La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron said the department was grateful for all of the support from the community.
“This was not the outcome we had hoped for throughout this search. Our thoughts are with Eliotte’s family, friends and all those who knew Eliotte. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from so many within the La Crosse community, the State of Wisconsin and nationally to locate Eliotte.”
Heinz, a graduate student at Viterbo University, a private Catholic college in La Crosse, was last seen walking along Front Street South in La Crosse, Wisconsin, around 3:20 a.m. on July 20. Police, as well as her family and friends, had spent the last few days searching for her.
No additional information was available on Wednesday.
