Back in 2018, a 2-year-old pit bull mix named Luna was on the brink of losing everything. Listed for euthanasia at the Wichita Animal Shelter in Kansas, her future looked grim — until Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary opened its doors and stepped in to save her.

“She was one of the very first dogs we rescued when we opened seven years ago,” said Miranda Munden, the volunteer coordinator at Always & Furever. “She’s been with us almost every day since.”

But despite her sweet nature, Luna has been adopted and returned five times.

When she first arrived, staff quickly realized Luna was reactive toward other dogs. A training facility offered to work with her — and even adopted her, giving everyone hope that Luna had finally found her forever. But when the trainers started a family, they decided Luna no longer fit their lives and sent her back.

“It was such a surprise, especially coming from professional trainers,” Munden said.

From there, a string of failed adoptions followed. One adopter returned Luna due to her severe allergies, which require a salmon-based diet, medication injections, and careful skin care. Another gave her up because she didn’t get along with a new boyfriend. Most recently, Luna was brought back after struggling at a vet visit — something the rescue had specifically warned and prepared the new family for.

“We thought we had everything covered,” Munden said. “We had long conversations, stocked her meds, updated her vaccines… even had a sponsor offer to pay for all her food and medical care — for life.”

But the new adopter was told by a vet that Luna should be euthanized.

“We took her back immediately,” Munden said.

That was two years ago. And through it all, Luna remains resilient — and hopeful.

“She’s mellow. She just hangs out in her little dog bed, in her pajamas, waiting for someone to snuggle her,” Munden shared.

Luna now spends her days with her best friend, Copper — another special needs pup at the sanctuary. He isn’t up for adoption, but he’s the perfect sidekick. The two play like puppies and nap like old friends. Copper accepts Luna completely, even when she gets a little protective of her things.

Luna isn’t perfect. But she’s loyal, loving, and ready to give her heart to someone who truly understands her needs.

She’s not just waiting for a home — she’s waiting for the person who will finally stay.
