As Central Texas grapples with the devastating aftermath of historic floods that claimed over 90 lives, entire communities are left reeling — and not just people. Among the debris and heartbreak are animals searching desperately for safety, family, and hope.
One of those survivors is a small dog with a heroic name: Superman.

Found curled up amidst storm wreckage, Superman had nowhere to go. His owner, tragically, was among those lost in the floods, leaving the little dog frightened, alone, and vulnerable.
When search and rescue teams spotted Superman, his fear was obvious. He kept his distance, unsure if he could trust anyone again. But the rescue team didn’t give up.

“He was terrified, physically and emotionally,” said volunteers with Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), the organization leading animal relief efforts. “But with time, patience, and compassion, we earned his trust.”
Once safely in their care, Superman was brought to a medical team for a checkup. Despite his trauma, he was in good condition — a testament to his resilience.
The team then reached out to his surviving family members, who are still reeling from their loss. They’re committed to bringing Superman home, but need time to rebuild their lives before they can care for him again.
In the meantime, Superman has been placed with a loving and experienced foster caregiver who is helping him heal until his family is ready.
“For his family, Superman is more than a pet — he’s the last living connection to a loved one they lost,” APA! shared. “We’re doing everything we can to keep that bond intact.”
As Texas communities begin the long process of recovery, APA! is calling for continued support. Local volunteers are urgently needed, and those outside the area can offer help through donations.
“This disaster has impacted all living beings,” said Dr. Ellen Jefferson, APA!’s president and CEO. “People are clinging to their pets as their final links to lost loved ones. These animals matter more than ever.”
Superman’s journey is far from over, but he’s no longer alone — and thanks to the kindness of strangers, he’s one step closer to going home.
