NN.Dumped with the Trash, But Not Forgotten: Mama Dog and Her Puppies Rescued from Landfill in Los Angeles

Just weeks ago, what looked like a pile of white fluff near a landfill in Los Angeles turned out to be something far more heartbreaking — a small family of dogs, abandoned and fighting to survive.

The discovery was made by a concerned citizen who immediately reached out for help. Logan’s Legacy 29 founder, Suzette Hall, received the call and was devastated by the reality: a mother dog and her puppies had been left behind in the dirt and debris, with no food, no water, and no shelter — just trash.

“A mama and her babies left behind with the garbage. They didn’t even leave food or water,” Hall shared on Facebook.

The mother, now named Feather, was emaciated and covered in fleas, but she was doing everything in her power to protect her little ones. Despite the harsh conditions and extreme hunger, Feather kept her puppies — later named Pho, Daikon, Lychee, and Nieve — close, cuddling them to stay warm and safe.

Hall, deeply moved by the images and the urgency of the situation, dispatched two of her most trusted volunteers, Yamy Nuñez and Karla, to the site. In the meantime, All Dogs LA, another rescue group, stepped in to safeguard the dogs until help could arrive.

“I didn’t want them falling into the wrong hands,” Hall explained. “We are so grateful to All Dogs LA for stepping in so quickly.”

Once on site, the rescue effort began. Some of the puppies had already learned to hide under discarded items, making the mission a challenge — but one the team refused to fail. After a determined search, every last pup and their mother were safely loaded into the car and rushed to the vet.

The aftermath revealed just how much the family had been through. The puppies were suffering from severe flea infestations and internal parasites like hookworms and roundworms. Feather herself had a large umbilical hernia. But through it all, they remained gentle and resilient.

“Those poor babies… it was so painful to see them like that,” Hall told The Dodo.

Now, after days of treatment and rest, Feather and her pups are finally recovering. Their conditions have improved dramatically, and they’re all preparing to move into foster homes — and eventually, into loving forever families.

As for Feather, her days of sleeping in the dirt, protecting her babies from the unknown, are over.

“Tonight, they are safe,” Hall wrote. “And Feather can finally sleep knowing she never has to protect her babies alone again.”
