The San Francisco 49ers have been playing their home games in Santa Clara at Levi’s Stadium since 2014.
Yet, compared to some of the newer stadiums that have been built since then, some think Levi’s Stadium is a joke by comparison.
A recent post on social media that got some traction truly captured that viewpoint. Evan Sowards on X did not mince words on how Levi’s Stadium compares to newer stadiums:
In response to a post showcasing the futuristic-looking new Buffalo Bills stadium, Sowards wrote, “I love how the 49ers built basically a traditional Texas high school football stadium and after that every single team built the most insane state of the art architectural phenomenon football stadiums lmao.”
It is true that when compared to the Bills’ new stadium or SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Levi’s Stadium can seem pretty paltry by comparison.
The Niners have played their home games in several different stadiums in the franchise’s history. While it was definitely time for the team to move on from Candlestick, it was easy to make the case in the early years of Levi’s Stadium that the new home was a bust.
From turf issues, to the heat problems on one side of the field, which have persisted, to the team just being bad in those early years, it seemed like Levi’s Stadium would turn into a metaphor for the franchise as it sank lower and lower.
Yet, as head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch took over the franchise and turned its fortunes around, Levi’s Stadium does not seem quite as terrible as it did in those early years. Winning can do wonders for perceptions.
Most rankings have Levi’s Stadium in the bottom third of all NFL stadiums. There are certainly stadiums out there that are worse, but no one would say it is a must-visit NFL venue.
There are some very cool features like the museum, which takes you through the storied history of the 49ers franchise. Tickets are only $49 because, of course, they are.
Sure, when compared to the new spaceship-like stadiums being built, Levi’s Stadium does not seem like much. Yet, it is still home and the Niners have been fortunate enough to have some memorable moments and win two NFC Championships there.
Plus, the 49ers have an opportunity to win a Super Bowl on their home turf this year as Super Bowl LX will be played at Levi’s Stadium.
If the Niners can do that, Levi’s Stadium’s status will certainly rise in the minds of fans.
