A German backpacker who went missing for 12 days in Australia’s vast and unforgiving Outback has been found alive in what authorities are calling a “miracle rescue.”

27-year-old Lukas Weber had last been seen setting off on a solo hiking trip near Alice Springs, Northern Territory. When he failed to return, an extensive search operation was launched involving helicopters, drones, and local volunteers.

Against all odds, Lukas was discovered dehydrated but conscious by a rescue team on Monday. He was found near a dried-up creek bed, having survived with almost no food and relying on limited water sources he found along the way.
According to officials, Lukas had managed to stay alive by rationing the water he carried and finding shade during the peak heat. “It’s truly remarkable he’s alive,” one search team leader said.
Lukas was airlifted to a local hospital, where doctors say he’s expected to make a full recovery. His family in Germany expressed overwhelming relief and gratitude to Australian authorities and volunteers.
The story serves as a powerful reminder of both the dangers and the resilience found in the Australian Outback — and the human spirit.
