- CBS News reports that Renee Smajstrla (9) and Janie Hunt (9)—two of the 25 girls missing from Camp Mystic—have been tragically confirmed dead in the post-flood recovery efforts
The recent devastating floods in Central Texas have left behind more than just physical destruction — they’ve torn into the hearts of families across the state, including one of the most prominent in sports: the Hunt family.
Among the 51 victims lost in the disaster was Janie Hunt, a 9-year-old cousin of Kansas City Chiefs and FC Dallas owner Clark Hunt. Janie was attending Camp Mystic, a beloved summer retreat nestled near the Guadalupe River, when floodwaters surged through the region, destroying cabins and sweeping away the lives of several young campers.
The loss of Janie has left the Hunt family shattered. In a joint statement released days after the tragedy, they expressed their heartbreak:
“Janie was a bright light in our family. Her joy, kindness, and spirit touched everyone she met. We are devastated by this loss and pray for the families of every child affected by this unthinkable tragedy.”
The tragedy at Camp Mystic has left a scar that will take years to heal.
