Detroit Lions insiders are buzzing with word that the team is exploring options to bring back a former Pro Bowl edge rusher to reinforce their defensive front ahead of the 2025 season.

NFL analysts and sportswriters have highlighted veteran edge rushers Za’Darius Smith and Matthew Judon as strong candidates. Detroit cut Smith in March, and he’s expressed interest in returning. “Hopefully I can get back to Detroit,” Smith told USA TODAY during the BET Awards, citing his leadership role and fit within the Lions’ system  . In eight games last season with Detroit, Smith contributed four sacks, 12 tackles, and a pass defensed  .

Meanwhile, analysts covering Detroit suggest the Lions might also consider veteran edge Matthew Judon. Judon, a four-time Pro Bowler, recorded 5.5 sacks last season and, according to Heavy.com, would be an ideal complement to Aidan Hutchinson  .

With star edge Aidan Hutchinson working his way back from a 2024 leg injury and other depth pieces such as Marcus Davenport, Josh Paschal, and rookie Ahmed Hassanein still developing, the Lions’ pass rush remains a work in progress  . A reliable veteran presence would provide stability and mentorship.

Lions GM Brad Holmes has acknowledged the challenge of finding top-tier pass rushers in free agency or via trades and downplayed big splashes earlier this year, saying “probably not” when asked about adding a blockbuster rusher  . However, with salary-cap flexibility, Detroit appears willing to revisit their approach.

A return of Smith—or possibly a high-impact signing like Judon—would be a strategic move to support Hutchinson and solidify the depth chart opposite him. As training camp approaches, Lions coaches and brass are expected to clarify their plans.
