kp6.Why ‘Celtics City’ should help push current Celtics towards history

The Boston Celtics have 78 years of deep-rooted history filled with 18 world championships, countless all-time greats and moments that have become synonymous with winning in the city of Boston.

And on March 3, fans will have a chance to relive the highest of the highs and lowest of the lows in HBO’s “Celtics City,” a nine-part documentary series detailing the storied history of the Celtics, on and off the parquet.

Executive producers Bill Simmons, Connor Schell and Gabe Honig assembled over 80 interviews and hours of footage according to Warner Bros. Discovery to try and tell the storied history of the Celtics.

“It’s going to be amazing to see it up on screen, celebrating the Celtics of the past as well as the present and future,” Wyc Grousbeck told reporters on Feb. 21.

While fans will watch reminiscing on all the great moments, the series should also provide a valuable perspective for this group of current Celtics. One banner is nice, but multiple will put the likes of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Joe Mazzulla into rare air within the walls of TD Garden and the city.

“It gives perspective into the responsibility we have in moving the organization forward,” Mazzulla said. “If the people before us didn’t do what they did and achieve what they did then this job isn’t what it is. It gives great perspective on the opportunity that we have, and also the ups and downs that go into going after greatness.”

This documentary may be coming at the perfect time for the Celtics, too. While they have seemingly turned the corner as of late, winning 12 of their last 15, there was a large part of December and January where they seemed to just be going through the motions.

The Nikola Jokic-Markieff Morris beef fed off family

Some beeves are petty, some beeves start small and linger, but the Nikola Jokic-Markieff Morris beef was different. It started when one giant shoved a slightly smaller giant really, really hard. It was quite shocking for me, a non-giant, to watch, and based on Markeiff Morris being out for 58 games with whiplash after the shove, it was pretty shocking for him as well. Now, consider the fact that both beef participants are extremely close with their brothers. And also that their brothers are known for shows of aggression and being strong and one used to be a professional MMA fighter. And you’ve got yourself a beefball with no filler, no biding agent, just beef.

Last year, Boston was hungry and determined to win Banner 18, and besides Jrue Holiday, the roster’s first championship. It didn’t skip any steps and won a total of 80 games in pursuit of that title, but this year, there have been points where they just look bored.

“Obviously you have dreams to do it when you were a little kid, and for it to come to reality is pretty cool,” Sam Hauser said. “I’ll always be able to come back and look up in the rafters and say I had a small part in that banner. To be up next to all the other great teams up there hanging, all the retired numbers is pretty special.”

The Celtics need something to reignite that spark inside them, to give them a reason to commit everything they have in the pursuit of back-to-back titles.

“Celtics City” should give them all the motivation they need.

“From the episode we watched, it also showed the difficult parts, and I think that’s important to know, you have to take the good with the bad,” Mazzulla said.

This series should be a history lesson for much of the roster, as none are from the area, and it should show them how special and storied being a Celtics great truly is.

“This definitely dives into a deeper element about the team,” White said. “Obviously, I wasn’t born in the 80s, and I haven’t seen the early years so I’m looking forward to learning more about the Celtics history.”

From Bill Russell’s 11 titles, the 80s Celtics v. Lakers rivalry, and the emergence of the Big tThree in 2008, the series should be chock full of legendary moments that these current Celtics can aspire to resemble.

Last week, Tatum even discussed chasing Bird to become one of the franchise’s all-time greats.

“Wearing a Celtics uniform comes with a lot of pride,” Tatum said. “The best Celtic ever is Larry Bird and even if I never reach that — maybe I do, maybe I don’t — you aspire to chase that guy. It comes with a level of focus and motivation every single day to be the best you can.”

The doc should also give the likes of Tatum and Brown a good snapshot of their place in Celtics history as well. While there is still a lot more to be accomplished, it could be a good moment for those guys to take a step back and appreciate the journey.

“I’m still in the middle of it,” Brown said. “I’m still trying to carve out what my legacy is. I think winning the championship was a big step in that, but we’re still on the hunt. It’s hard to look at this overall moment when you’re still in the middle of it.”

Brown and the Celtics have the opportunity to cement their legacy this spring if they’re able to repeat as champions — the last time Boston repeated was 1968-69. It would be a moment that would make them stand out in history, and put them in the same conversation as Bird’s Celtics.

If anything, hopefully the series gives these current Celtics a good reminder and appreciation of what it means to wear the jersey and step onto the parquet — because it’s not like this everywhere.

“Every time I put on the jersey, I know it’s a blessing,” White said. “Just to play in the Garden in front of these great fans, it’s always a nice reminder.”
