On Friday last week, the whale was found lying on the ground in the forest about 15 meters away from Araruna beach on Marajo Island.

Scientists’ initial theory was that the giant animal may have been swept into the forest by a large wave or tide.
According to initial examinations, the whale is a calf that has not yet reached 12 months of age, but it is not yet known how it died.

Renata Emin, president of the Bicho D’Agua Institute and aquaculture expert, says:
‘We’re still not clear how it got here, but our guess is that the dead whale was drifting close to shore. It’s likely that the tide picked it up and dragged it into the trees.’
‘We don’t know why the humpback whale was off the northern coast of Brazil in February, apart from being here like this . It’s not a normal situation.’
Studies on the fate of the whale are continuing.

Emin continued his explanation as follows; “Humpback whales do not migrate north. The last time we saw one was three years ago, but that is very rare.”
